Maria Dona Verra

Maria is an active participant in the city of Montebello, as President of the School Site Council at La Merced Intermediate School, an active member of the English Learner Advisory Commitee and a visitor for the Montebello Unified School District Advisory Comittee she has truly shown her commitment in helping our kids' future.

She has done all this as a single mother and attends East Los Angeles in her pursuit of completing her AA degree, a bachelor's degree and eventually working for the probation department.

Mariaelena Lara

Mariaelena is a single mother who has overcame being homeless and living an unhealthy lifestyle for 28 years. In her own words, "I cried quite a few evenings after my children went to sleep, living on $40 a month after bills and keeping  family togeter while maintaining good grades and attendence at East Los Angeles College."

Mariaelena has committed herself to giving back by interning at Skid Row, and Bienvenidos Family Services. She hopes to one day work with young children or individuals right out of prison and be able to give back to society. There was a seed of hope planted within her, she learns to care for and feed that hope, which has turned to faith.

Maria lives in Montebello with her four children, she's pictured here with Tony Mariscal (president of Xtreme Youth Football and cheer) and Melinda Vasquez.

Tony awarded her a voucher for her four kids to play free for the 2007 season.

Maria Leyva

Ms. Ramirez (on left) is a single parent, working full time to support herself and her two year old daughter. She is pursuing her formal education in order to provide a better and more auspicious future. She received a certificate from the Dean's Honor List in the Fall of 2006

Her goal is to work in the Canine Unit of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Brenda (on right) is a single mother of a three year old and a two year old girl. Her children are her motivation as she stated, "They give me the strength to accomplish my goal of earning my Bachelor's Degree in Administration of Justice."

Hermila Flores

2006 Recipient

The very first Melinda Vasquez Scholarship was awarded to Hermila Flores, a current AJ student who hopes to follow in Ms. Vasquez’s foot steps and transfer to a university to continue her education. Ms. Flores is an excellent student and single mother.

Her achievements were recognized at a recent banquet organized by the Administration of Justice Student Club. In addition to Ms. Flores, six other deserving AJ majors received scholarship awards totaling over $4,000. The scholarships monies were raised through club fundraising efforts and corporate donations.
